下家杏樹の個展「Layers of Emotion」を開催いたします。

SUBMARINE GALLERY のPOP-UP企画として、東京・三田のギャラリー Alpha Contemporaryに場所をお借りし、開催する運びとなりました。

下家杏樹は、レトロな漫画やアニメからの影響を受けた独特の画風で、鳥や犬など様々な生き物たちを可愛らしく描き続けていますが、彼女の魅力はそれだけではありません。

生命の輝きや無垢な愛情にあふれた作品…と同時に、生命の儚さや苦みを感じさせるブラックでストレンジなテイストも、下家杏樹の大きな特徴なのです。

本展では、カラフルで幸福感に満ちた作品はもちろん、モノクロ傾向の作品、フラットな画面構成による版画作品など、彼女のペインティングの技術で表現された「感情の層」が織りなす下家杏樹ワールドの奥深さ、幅広さを感じさせる意欲的な作品を約20点展示いたします。この機会にぜひご覧ください。

As part of SUBMARINE GALLERY's POP-UP project, we will be holding an exhibition by Anju Shimoie titled “Layers of Emotion” at Gallery Alpha Contemporary in Mita, Tokyo.

Anju Shimoie continues to draw cute birds, dogs, and various other creatures with a unique drawing style influenced by retro manga and anime. But that's not the only thing that makes her attractive.

One of Anju Shimoie's major characteristics is that she is able to create not only works that are full of the brilliance of life and innocent love, but also dark and strange works that convey the fragility and bitterness of life.

This exhibition will feature works that are colorful and full of happiness, as well as works painted in monochrome colors and prints with flat screen compositions, all of which are woven by the "Layers of Emotion" expressed through her painting techniques. We will exhibit approximately 20 ambitious works that give you a sense of the depth and breadth of Anju's world. Please take this opportunity to take a look.

Artist's Statement

アートとは何か？を考えて、最近行き着いた答え（現時点で）は、人間の脳が進化していく過程で、どうしようもなく生み出してしまうもの、それこそがアートなのだろうと思う。

私が作品を制作していく中で、「脳」はとてもよく働いていて、たとえば抽象的な大まかなイメージを捉えるには右脳を、細部の情報には左を使うというような感じである。

こうして右脳と左脳を交互に行ったり来たりして一つの画面に絵を描くのだが、全く違う二つの要素が一つの画面の中で共存するのは難しく、上手く行った時にはとても面白い。

さて、メディアやSNSを覗くと、私の感情を良くも悪くも揺さぶるニュースや情報で溢れている。

しかしながら、それらを観ることや感じることはできても、画面の向こうで起きている出来事に対して行動して、具体的に何かを変えることは難しい。

このフラストレーションが溜まってくると、体が勝手に動き、筆を取っていることはよくある。

「SUNRISE」含む白黒のシリーズは、「生(性)と死」をテーマに制作した。

私自身、一昨年娘を出産した経験から、生と死は同じ位置にあるということを身をもって感じたからである。

私は色＝生命・感情だと思っていて、白黒＝死・過去・数字だと考えている。これらの作品は一見、白と黒に見えるが、下地に赤を使うことにより、肉体的で複雑なレイヤーを表現している。

二つの違う要素を一つの画面に層として描くことで、私は新たな可能性を模索している。

What is art? The answer I've come up with (at the moment) is that art is what the human brain creates in the process of evolution, regardless of will.

As I create my art piece, my “brain'' works very well; for example, I use my right brain to capture abstract, general images, and my left brain to receive detailed information.

In this way, there is a frequent shuttling between the right and left brains to draw a picture on a single canvas, but it is difficult for two completely different elements to coexist on a single canvas, and when it goes well, it is very interesting.

Now, when I look at the media and social media, a flood of news and information shakes my emotions, for better or for worse.

However, even though I can see and feel these things, it is difficult to act on the events happening on the other side of the screen and do something to change the situation.

When this frustration builds up, my body often moves on its own and I find myself picking up the paintbrush.

The monochrome series, including “SUNRISE”,were created with the theme of “life (sex) and death.”

This is because, from my own experience of giving birth to my daughter two years ago, I felt firsthand that life and death are in the same position.

In my mind, color = life and emotions, and monochrome = death, the past, and numbers. At first glance, these works appear to be monochrome, but by using red as the base, they express physicality and complex layers. By depicting two different elements as layers on one screen, I am exploring new possibilities.

下家杏樹 Anju Shimoie

1996年愛知県⽣まれ。2020年名古屋芸術⼤学⼤学院美術研究科修了。人物や動物などのフォルムを作り出す線の太さに強弱がついており、やわらかで有機的に描く。デジタルが覆いつくす現在の中で、いわば油彩画の王道を進もうとする。モチーフは日常生活で出会った様々な物事や感情のメタファーであり、画面全体が下家の脳内にある私的に構築されたワンダーランドであり、そこには笑いもあれば毒もある。サマーキャンプTOKYO2019グランプリ受賞。
